Our Lady of the Valley is a life-care facility sponsored by the Catholic Church in Roanoke. It opened in 1989 and had been expanded three times previously. IDG was hired to design two additions.

The 15,070 SF north addition is a 30-bed rehabilitation facility for residents recovering from surgeries and other health setbacks. Residents have private rooms and access to a large hotel lobby like space where they can watch TV, read, socialize with family and other patients, and take their meals. A Bistro kitchen offers cooked-to-order meals and snacks. Residents needing physical therapy utilize existing facilities in the complex.

The 6,400 SF south addition is four stories and expands the original three-story residential wing. The first floor provides activity space for dementia patients living on that floor. The activity room on the second floor is open to all residents and is set up for movies and musical performances. The third floor Chapel is open to all residents and is accentuated with stunning stained glass windows. The basement floor houses the mechanical systems for the addition.
