Kirk Family YMCA
Location: Roanoke, VA
Project Type: Renovation, Adaptive Reuse, Expansion
Project Size: 54,000 sq. ft.
IDG breathed new life into the former Jefferson High School annex building, converting it into a new athletic and fitness facility for the YMCA in Downtown Roanoke. The facility includes two indoor pools — one for swimming laps and one for water aerobics and swimming instruction, a large Fitness Center with two basketball courts, an elevated walking / running track, two group exercise studios, a cycling studio, four racquetball courts, and a multi-purpose room. The new space provides a full array of fitness and recreation opportunities. By repurposing the former Jefferson High School annex building, the project team reduced the cost of the project by nearly $1 million.
Membership at the Kirk YMCA has more than doubled since the new building opened. A second phase of expansion added 9,000 sf to double the size of the Fitness Center and add a Teen Center.
